"The editors love dark fantasy/horror. Great science-fiction and sword-and-sorcery stories are welcome. A good ironic twist is appreciated, but each story will stand or fall on its own merit. We're looking for true wordsmiths -- magicians -- enchanters. Each story should cast a spell over the reader that unobtrusively suspends disbelief. Carriage House Review is a biannual literary magazine devoted to dark fiction. Our aim is to present previously unpublished writings in the spirit of such authors as Joyce Carol Oates, Ramsey Campbell, Shirley Jackson, Thomas Ligotti, Anne Sexton, Peter Straub, Flannery O'Connor, Henry James, and A.M. Homes. We are seeking intelligent, disquieting, disturbing, well-written work. Beyond these considerations, the sky's the limit; please do not feel restricted to conventional "horror" themes. We believe that what constitutes "horror" writing encompasses far more than what one labeled shelf at the bookstore can hold. A familiarity with the works of at least one of the writers listed above or on our website is strongly recommended.

Do not send full manuscripts until requested! Seeking cover letter, short bio, and brief summary of plot/key characters OR first three chapters/50 consecutive pages.

"Traditional supernatural horror only, featuring ghosts, vampires, witches, werewolves, etc. The more familiar the monster,' the better ... nebulous evil forces are less likely to interest us.

"Absolutely no: media tie-ins, sci-fi or futuristic settings, s&s/heroic fantasy, medical thrillers, psychological horror, biological/technological threats or world cataclysms (even if initially driven by a supernatural entity), non-supernatural serial killers or mysteries, paranormal romance fiction masquerading as horror, young adult horror.

"Erotic content ok but no erotica.' Gay/lesbian themes ok, but no manifestos. Extreme or exploitative child endangerment, misogynist tone or any form of child pornography will automatically be rejected.

"Best summary of what we'd love to see: Scream meets The Lost Boys ... The Craft meetsFriends ... Ghost Story meets Melrose Place... Our point: witty, sexy and engaging youthful characters (20 & thirty-somethings) imperiled by familiar supernatural threats like vampires, witches and ghosts... Spooky, macabre atmosphere filled with traditional Gothic trappings [Gothic, not Goth]... blended with a modern, spunky, contextual milieu."

"We want strong, narrative fiction with compelling, characters and an easy-to-follow plot. Poetic phrasing is lovely ... as long as the reader can follow your storyline. We are not looking for material that was too risky or too weird for a major trade publisher."

"Daily I receive requests for the mysterious 'writers' guidelines.' Really the magazines are our only guidelines. We follow Arthur Machen's recipe of 'Beauty plus strangeness equals terror.' We are moved by the works of Machen, Poe, Baudelaire, M.R. James, Gogol, Gautier, Bruno Shulz, Kafka . . . and are seeking modern authors who have been similarly moved. If you're motivated by the gorgeousness of the grotesque, find elegance and mystery in things inexplicable, and genuinely love and collect supernatural literature, then you have a running chance."

"I want stories that have one, more, or all of the following: the supernatural, surrealism, offbeat, bizarre, darkly fantastic, magic. I do not want to see overdone stories (i.e. vampires and the like). The writing and writing style should be polished and clean. Journal-entry stories, stories told in the first person, stories about revenge, cannibalism, all have a scant chance at being considered. Don't be afraid to try me with swift, quirky sentences; the more fast-moving and weird the story, the better chance you'll have. Atmosphere is also a big plus. Try to avoid an excess of dialogue; rely on atmosphere and mood to tell the story."

Literary F/DF/SF/H, Mysteries and Mainstream. Prefer serious stories where the character and situation are fully developed without being over written. We enjoy strong or subtle elements of fantasy, magic, the supernatural and the unexplained, i.e. Ray Bradbury or Joyce Carol Oates. Length: 2500-8000 preferred although a few longer pieces if truly exceptional. NO porn, hard-tech sf, true confessions, novel excerpts unless they stand alone as stories, gory slice-n-dice, sex with or violence against children - nor lovely, rambling prose for the sake of loveliness. Something should happen. We want stories with an edge but not all bleak endings. We look for character, setting, dialogue, narrative and action - not necessarily in that order.

Neverworlds

"The basic goal of 'Neverworlds' is to put unique, thoughtful, imaginative fiction and art online. Period. Sci-fi (the harder the better), dark fantasy, horror, mystery, psychological thriller [....]

"Of course there are a few categories that ( unless they're particularly outstanding) probably won't even be considered, such as romance, goth/vampire stories, non-fiction, lovesongs, grocery lists, etc.

"While there are no restrictions on language, violence, or explicit sex, this is also not an open invitation for such material either. Erotica is fine, but it'd better be well-crafted and sensibly plotted, not simply watered-down porn. Splatterpunk would have to be pretty impressive to be considered. This is not meant to discourage anyone from submitting fiction in these areas, it just seems that a certain level of less-refined writing exists where these genres are concerned. Keep it reasonable."

Query for longer than 5,000 words. "I am looking for stories well written enough to fit a mainstream publication except for the dark atmosphere and the terror factor. I want stories saturated with dark mood and atmosphere, stories which will make the reader identify with the character and will get into the reader's head and haunt him/her during the night. I want stories that make the reader turn on the light at the head of the stair before climbing them for bed at night. Scare me, and give me interesting, believable characters, and a beginning, middle and end to the story and you will get an offer. My favorite magazines are CEMETERY DANCE, DEATHREALM, and TERMINAL FRIGHT, the all but departed INTO THE DARKNESS, and the recently departed PULPHOUSE. If you send me a story with style and content that would or would have fit one of these magazines it will have a good chance of being accepted.

NOTE: I have a bias against horror stories written in the first person. If you send one, it will have to have a plot that will make it realistic, in short it will have to be exceptional.

Evanston, IL 60201-2743

Stories that appeal to the higher senses, that have "wowness" throughout, not merely a surprise ending.

"Orient the reader immediately by giving them something familiar to latch onto and then taking them somewhere new. If you are writing science fiction, master the science you are presenting by doing library research. If you are writing fantasy, master the intricacies of your new world. If you are writing horror, master the psychology of your characters. In all cases, you must gain full mastery over the language you use."

"Good strong stories with three dimensional characters are a must, but with a "dark" slant. What do I mean by dark? One interpretation might be: dark fantasy as opposed to horror . . . meaningful science fiction as opposed to hard science stories without heart. Psychologicial. Experimental. Black humor. Something with punch that leaves me thinking, but keeps me entertained. Just send your best stuff. If a story really hits me, I'll publish it without hesitation, regardless of guidelines." Tor is looking for more horror. "Always looking for good vampire fiction. Traditional monsters such as werewolves, mummies, zombies, etc. We're interested in things that draw on other than Judeo-Christian mythology. We'd like to see horror that deals with religion and faith (any variety) and isn't silly about it. We are also looking for psychological horror."

"Note: If you are sending a MS without an agent, you must have either published at novel length or have a body of short fiction with the genre. Otherwise, we prefer to see proposals only. Writers who have published at novel length or published 10 or more short stories may submit full MSs. In the case of writers of short fiction, it makes our lives easier if you include a list of your published stories and where they appeared. [...] When submitting a proposal, include a brief cover letter giving any publication credits, and briefly identify the type of horror. First three chapters or approximately 50 pages. Do not send samples from throughout the MS. Complete synopsis of the entire book, including the submitted chapters and the end."

"Submissions should fall somewhere in the realm of horror, be it traditional or non-traditional. We do not want pornography; sex and erotica is fine if it is an elemental part of the story. We do not want stories that include child abuse or the murder of children, unless it is integral to the story. Please, no "it was just a dream" stories. If a story has been published before, please advise us as to where and when.
